In response to “The White Man’s Burden”
Half devil half child
I dance to the sound of the jungle
They say be the bamboo
But I will not bend
I hear the silence of my people
Laid prone at the foot of the white man
I am not his burden
And I bite the hand that feeds me lies
I pray the white man’s prayer
And I wear the white man’s garb
I take the white man’s whiteness
And let it brown under the heat of the Pacific sun
